Living With Lyme Disease: Could Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Support Recovery?

For many people, Lyme disease does not end when antibiotic treatment is completed. Fatigue, muscle and joint pain, headaches, disrupted sleep, and difficulty concentrating may continue to affect work, relationships, exercise, and everyday life.

These symptoms are real, even when routine testing does not provide a simple explanation.

Researchers often use the term post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome, or PTLDS, when certain symptoms continue for at least six months after a person has completed recommended antibiotic treatment. Scientists are still studying why this happens and why some people recover quickly while others experience persistent symptoms.

For patients searching for additional ways to support recovery, hyperbaric oxygen therapy—or HBOT—may come up in conversation. Although HBOT is not an FDA-cleared treatment for Lyme disease or PTLDS, early research and limited clinical reports have created interest in its potential role as an adjunctive therapy.

Understanding Persistent Symptoms After Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is caused by bacteria from the Borrelia group and is most commonly transmitted through the bite of an infected tick. When diagnosed early, Lyme disease is generally treated with antibiotics.

Most patients improve after treatment. However, a subset of patients continues to experience symptoms such as:

  • Persistent fatigue
  • Muscle or joint discomfort
  • Problems with memory or concentration
  • Headaches
  • Changes in sleep
  • Reduced exercise tolerance
  • Numbness, tingling, or other neurologic symptoms
  • Difficulty returning to normal daily activities

A review published in Frontiers in Medicine described fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and musculoskeletal pain as common features reported by patients with PTLDS. Potential explanations being investigated include changes in immune activity, persistent inflammation, tissue injury, altered neurologic function, and other effects that may remain after the initial infection has been treated. Different patients may have different factors contributing to their symptoms, which is one reason a thorough medical evaluation remains important.

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing increased concentrations of oxygen while inside a chamber pressurized above normal atmospheric pressure.

Under pressure, more oxygen can dissolve into the plasma and other body fluids. This allows oxygen to reach tissues through pathways that do not depend entirely on red blood cells. The combination of oxygen and pressure can also influence several biological processes involved in recovery.

Research suggests that HBOT may affect:

  • Tissue oxygenation
  • Inflammatory signaling
  • Blood-vessel development
  • Cellular energy production
  • Immune activity
  • The body’s repair responses

These effects are not specific to Lyme disease. They are part of the broader physiology researchers study when evaluating HBOT for wounds, neurologic injuries, inflammatory conditions, and other medical concerns. What Does the Lyme Disease Research Show?

At this time, the evidence for using HBOT in patients with Lyme disease is limited.

A 2014 publication described a patient with persistent Lyme-related symptoms who experienced improvement after completing a course of HBOT. The authors called HBOT an adjunctive treatment, meaning it was used in addition to other medical care rather than as a replacement. They also acknowledged that published information about its effectiveness remained limited. Read the case report.

A case report can help identify an area worth studying, but it cannot establish that a treatment will work for most patients. It does not include a control group, and improvement in one person may not predict what another patient will experience.

This distinction matters. There is a medical basis for continued research, but there is not currently enough evidence to say that HBOT cures Lyme disease, eliminates persistent infection, or produces predictable results for every patient.

What Might HBOT Be Used to Support?

When HBOT is considered for someone with a history of Lyme disease, the goal should be clearly defined.

Rather than promising to “kill Lyme,” a responsible treatment discussion may focus on whether HBOT could support concerns such as:

  • Persistent fatigue
  • Cognitive complaints or “brain fog”
  • Chronic pain
  • Reduced physical function
  • Slow recovery after illness
  • Inflammatory or neurologic symptoms

Even then, outcomes cannot be guaranteed. Symptoms associated with PTLDS can overlap with thyroid disorders, anemia, autoimmune conditions, sleep disorders, medication effects, nutritional deficiencies, other infections, and neurologic or cardiovascular problems.

HBOT should not replace an appropriate evaluation for these possibilities.

HBOT Is an Adjunct: Not a Replacement for Lyme Treatment

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not a substitute for antibiotics when antibiotics are medically indicated. It should also never be used as a reason to delay evaluation of new or worsening symptoms.

Patients considering HBOT should involve the healthcare professionals managing their Lyme disease or persistent symptoms. Coordination becomes especially important when a patient has heart, lung, ear, neurologic, blood-sugar, or medication-related concerns.

Safety Matters

  • Medical screening before treatment
  • FDA-cleared hard-shell hyperbaric chambers
  • Trained and certified hyperbaric personnel
  • Continuous patient supervision
  • Written safety and emergency procedures
  • Individualized pressure and oxygen protocols
  • Communication with the patient throughout treatment

More pressure and more oxygen do not automatically mean better results. The safest and most appropriate protocol depends on the individual patient.

A Thoughtful Path Forward

Living with persistent symptoms after Lyme disease can be frustrating, particularly when the symptoms are difficult to measure or explain. Patients deserve to be taken seriously while also receiving honest information about what is known—and what remains uncertain.

HBOT has biological effects that may be relevant to inflammation, tissue oxygenation, and recovery. However, Lyme-specific research currently consists largely of limited clinical observations and case-level evidence. Larger, controlled studies are still needed.

For the right patient, HBOT may be considered as one part of a coordinated recovery plan. The decision should begin with careful screening, realistic goals, and a discussion of the potential benefits, limitations, and risks.
