Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for multiple sclerosis

Your goals for mobility, energy, and daily life deserve time, attention, and an informed conversation.

RX-O2 offers a physician-led conversation about the evidence, your diagnosis, and the role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in your broader care plan. Our Scottsdale and Glendale teams serve patients across the Phoenix area.

Researchers continue to explore how hyperbaric oxygen influences immune activity and tissue biology relevant to MS. Meet with our team for a personalized discussion of this science, your goals, and the clinical evidence.

The starting point

Explore the science with your neurologic care team

MS research includes animal models, symptom reports, and controlled human trials. A treatment that changes immune activity in an animal model has not necessarily improved disability or relapse risk in people.

Your neurologist should guide disease-modifying treatment, relapse management, and rehabilitation. An HBOT discussion must not interrupt that care or imply that oxygen reverses MS.

The clinical context matters. HBOT is not established as a disease-modifying treatment for MS. New laboratory findings do not overturn negative controlled clinical results.

Connect the research to your goals

What matters in daily life?

Protect established treatment

Keep neurologic follow-up and disease-modifying treatment decisions central.

Understand the outcome

Distinguish a temporary symptom change from reduced relapses or disability progression.

Weigh the burden

Consider cost, travel, fatigue, and opportunity costs when evidence of benefit is weak.

Your goals help shape the conversation and provide a useful way to follow progress if treatment is prescribed.

Literature checked
October 20, 2026

2021 · Preclinical: mouse study

Immune effects in an experimental mouse model

Chiou HC, et al. Biomedicines. 08/02/2021.

Read the publication

A 2021 study reported altered T-cell activity and less disease severity in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, a mouse model used in MS research.

How to interpret it: This was preclinical research. It provides no direct evidence of improved symptoms, relapse prevention, or disability outcomes in humans.

1987 · Randomized, placebo-controlled trial

A placebo-controlled trial followed 120 patients

Barnes MP, et al. Journal of neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry. 1987 Nov.

Read the publication

HBOT did not change overall disability progression or acute relapse rate. Subjective bladder improvement was not confirmed by objective assessment.

How to interpret it: An isolated difference in one functional measure did not establish overall disease benefit. Individual findings must be interpreted in the context of the full trial.

2010 · Systematic review

A review found no clinically meaningful overall benefit

Bennett M, et al. CNS neuroscience & therapeutics. 2010 Apr.

Read the publication

The review evaluated randomized evidence from 12 studies and found no plausible meaningful benefit for the clinical course of MS. It did not recommend routine HBOT treatment.

How to interpret it: The trials were older, but their limitations do not constitute positive evidence. A benefit in an unproven subgroup remains a hypothesis.

What this means for your decision

Experimental immune findings keep this area scientifically interesting. Human controlled trials have not established an overall clinical benefit for MS, so ongoing research is essential. We welcome a conversation that helps you understand the evidence and make informed choices alongside your neurologist.

Plan with your care team

Start with your diagnosis and a coordinated plan

  1. Share the relevant records

Bring your neurologist’s assessment, current disease-modifying treatment, relapse history, and the specific research questions you want to discuss.

  2. Agree on the purpose of treatment

Review the evidence with your treating specialist and hyperbaric clinician. Identify specific outcomes to follow, the alternatives, and the reasons HBOT may or may not be appropriate.

  3. Set reassessment points

If treatment is prescribed, discuss the schedule, travel, costs, safety screening, and how progress will be reviewed. A published study schedule does not determine an individual prescription.

Your consultation is an opportunity to ask about expected benefits, treatment experience, scheduling, costs, and follow-up. We review suitability with you and coordinate with your treating clinicians when appropriate.

The RX-O2 difference

A team and setting you can get to know

An RX-O2 team member standing beside a hyperbaric chamber

Medical oversight from the start

Medical Director Marvin A. Borsand, DO, FACOS, FACCS, HCC, leads clinical oversight. A licensed medical provider reviews suitability and prescribes treatment when appropriate.

Medical hyperbaric equipment

Our clinics use FDA-cleared hard-shell chambers. You breathe 100% medical oxygen through a mask or hood while the chamber is pressurized with air.

Preparation and communication

NHSA-certified hyperbaric technicians explain the visit and monitor treatment. Tell us about ear pressure, positioning, mobility, or confinement concerns before you arrive.

Multiple sclerosis FAQs

Why are researchers interested in HBOT for MS?

Laboratory studies have found changes in immune responses in animal models relevant to MS. These findings support further investigation, while a meaningful benefit for people with MS still needs to be demonstrated.

What about animal studies showing less inflammation?

Animal models help researchers investigate mechanisms. They do not establish that a treatment improves the course of MS in people.

Should I change my MS medication?

No. Discuss medication and relapse management with your neurologist. Do not delay established care to pursue HBOT.

Where can I discuss this research near Phoenix?

RX-O2 has clinics in Scottsdale and Glendale. Bring your records or ask your provider to send a referral so that the team can review your circumstances and explain whether an outpatient consultation is appropriate.
