Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for migraine & cluster headache

Headache treatment should match the headache diagnosis and the goal, whether stopping an attack or reducing future attacks.

RX-O2 offers a physician-led conversation about the evidence, your diagnosis, and the role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in your broader care plan. Our Scottsdale and Glendale teams serve patients across the Phoenix area.

Small controlled studies have reported relief of acute migraine pain with HBOT. Meet with our team to explore this research and how it relates to your headache diagnosis and existing treatment plan.

The starting point

Two headache disorders, different oxygen treatments

Hyperbaric oxygen involves a pressurized chamber. Normal-pressure oxygen, sometimes prescribed for cluster attacks, does not require a chamber. Evidence for one exposure cannot be transferred to the other.

A headache specialist can clarify the diagnosis and review established acute and preventive options. Keep a record of attack frequency, duration, medication use, and changes in the usual pattern.

The clinical context matters. Research about stopping an acute headache does not show that a course of HBOT will prevent future migraine or cluster episodes.

Connect the research to your goals

What matters in daily life?

Attack burden

Record headache days, duration, and interference with work or family activities.

Acute relief

Distinguish relief during one attack from a sustained reduction in future attacks.

Prevention planning

Review established preventive options and medication use with your headache clinician.

Your goals help shape the conversation and provide a useful way to follow progress if treatment is prescribed.

1998 · Small controlled clinical study

An early controlled study in migraine with aura

Wilson JR, et al. Headache. 1998 Feb.

Read the publication

Women with migraine were assigned to oxygen at normal pressure or hyperbaric oxygen. Subjective pain decreased after the hyperbaric treatment.

How to interpret it: This small older study does not establish routine care, prevention, or sustained outcomes. Some physical tenderness measures did not distinguish the treatments.

2015 · Cochrane systematic review

A Cochrane review separated migraine from cluster headache

Publication indexed in PubMed. 2015.

Read the publication

The review found low-quality evidence for acute migraine relief with HBOT. It did not establish prevention of future attacks. Normal-pressure oxygen had a separate evidence base for cluster headache.

How to interpret it: Small studies and incomplete reporting limited confidence. The cluster headache evidence should not be used to claim that chamber treatment is effective.

What this means for your decision

The acute-pain findings provide a promising starting point for discussion, especially when headaches continue to disrupt daily life. Evidence for prevention remains limited, and ongoing research is needed. We can help you understand the findings and coordinate questions with your headache clinician.

Plan with your care team

Start with your diagnosis and a coordinated plan

  1. Share the relevant records

Bring a headache diary, diagnosis, medication history, and details of preventive or acute therapies already tried.

  2. Agree on the purpose of treatment

Review the evidence with your treating specialist and hyperbaric clinician. Identify specific outcomes to follow, the alternatives, and the reasons HBOT may or may not be appropriate.

  3. Set reassessment points

If treatment is prescribed, discuss the schedule, travel, costs, safety screening, and how progress will be reviewed. A published study schedule does not determine an individual prescription.

Your consultation is an opportunity to ask about expected benefits, treatment experience, scheduling, costs, and follow-up. We review suitability with you and coordinate with your treating clinicians when appropriate.

The RX-O2 difference

A team and setting you can get to know

Medical oversight from the start

Medical Director Marvin A. Borsand, DO, FACOS, FACCS, HCC, leads clinical oversight. A licensed medical provider reviews suitability and prescribes treatment when appropriate.

Medical hyperbaric equipment

Our clinics use FDA-cleared hard-shell chambers. You breathe 100% medical oxygen through a mask or hood while the chamber is pressurized with air.

Preparation and communication

NHSA-certified hyperbaric technicians explain the visit and monitor treatment. Tell us about ear pressure, positioning, mobility, or confinement concerns before you arrive.

Migraine & cluster headache FAQs

What benefit has been reported for migraine?

Small studies have reported reduced pain during acute migraine attacks. That is an encouraging signal, while prevention and lasting benefit remain open research questions.

Can HBOT prevent my next migraine?

The cited review did not establish prevention. A favorable response during an attack is not proof that future attacks will be reduced.

Should I delay my usual migraine rescue treatment?

No. Follow your prescribed acute-treatment plan and discuss changes with your headache clinician. New or unusual symptoms warrant assessment.

Where can I discuss this research near Phoenix?

RX-O2 has clinics in Scottsdale and Glendale. Bring your records or ask your provider to send a referral so that the team can review your circumstances and explain whether an outpatient consultation is appropriate.
