Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for severe anemia

In exceptional cases of severe anemia, hyperbaric oxygen can provide a temporary way to increase oxygen carried in plasma.

RX-O2 offers a physician-led conversation about the evidence, your diagnosis, and the role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in your broader care plan. Our Scottsdale and Glendale teams serve patients across the Phoenix area.

Published clinical experience supports a specialized rescue role when oxygen delivery is critically limited and transfusion cannot be given. This requires urgent hospital-led care. Explore the evidence below.

The starting point

Temporary oxygen support while the cause is treated

Hemoglobin in red blood cells normally carries most of the oxygen delivered to tissues. Profound anemia can reduce that delivery even when a pulse oximeter appears reassuring.

Under hyperbaric conditions, more oxygen dissolves directly in plasma. In selected critical situations, this can support tissue oxygenation while the team controls bleeding, treats the cause, and supports red-cell recovery.

The clinical context matters. HBOT does not replace lost red blood cells or correct the underlying cause of anemia. Blood transfusion and other definitive treatments should be used when clinically appropriate.

Connect the research to your goals

What matters in daily life?

Tissue oxygen delivery

Specialist teams assess organ function and physiological evidence of inadequate oxygen delivery.

Treatment of the cause

Control of bleeding and treatment of the anemia remain central to recovery.

A bridge to recovery

HBOT may serve as temporary support within a carefully monitored hospital plan.

Your goals help shape the conversation and provide a useful way to follow progress if treatment is prescribed.

2021 · Case report

Recovery reported in profound pernicious anemia

Publication indexed in PubMed. 2021.

Read the publication

A case report described a patient with a hemoglobin level of 2.6 g/dL who declined transfusion. The patient improved during treatment that included vitamin B12 replacement and HBOT.

How to interpret it: A single case cannot isolate the HBOT contribution or predict other patients’ outcomes. Treatment of the underlying vitamin deficiency was essential.

2024 · Clinical review

A specialist review describes the oxygen-bridge role

Van Meter KW, et al. Frontiers in medicine. 10/08/2024.

Read the publication

A 2024 review explains the use of increased dissolved plasma oxygen as temporary support in selected severe anemia when transfusion is unavailable or cannot be given.

How to interpret it: This is specialized clinical guidance and reported experience, not evidence that routine anemia should be treated in an outpatient chamber.

What this means for your decision

The clinical rationale and successful reports support a carefully selected rescue role. The decision depends on severity, the cause of anemia, available definitive treatment, and hospital monitoring. After stabilization, your treating team can advise whether any further hyperbaric involvement is appropriate.

Plan with your care team

Start with your diagnosis and a coordinated plan

  1. Share the relevant records

Provide the hospital assessment, anemia cause, hemoglobin trend, bleeding status, organ function, and treatment already underway.

  2. Agree on the purpose of treatment

Review the evidence with your treating specialist and hyperbaric clinician. Identify specific outcomes to follow, the alternatives, and the reasons HBOT may or may not be appropriate.

  3. Set reassessment points

If treatment is prescribed, discuss the schedule, travel, costs, safety screening, and how progress will be reviewed. A published study schedule does not determine an individual prescription.

Your consultation is an opportunity to ask about expected benefits, treatment experience, scheduling, costs, and follow-up. We review suitability with you and coordinate with your treating clinicians when appropriate.

Severe anemia FAQs

Is HBOT used for ordinary iron deficiency?

This page concerns exceptional severe anemia, not routine iron deficiency. Diagnosis and appropriate iron or other treatment should be directed by your clinician.

Does HBOT raise hemoglobin?

Its immediate purpose is to increase dissolved oxygen, not to create red blood cells. The underlying cause must be treated.

Can I arrange this instead of urgent hospital care?

No. Critically low oxygen delivery is a medical emergency. A hospital team must direct evaluation and treatment.

Where can I discuss this research near Phoenix?

RX-O2 has clinics in Scottsdale and Glendale. Bring your records or ask your provider to send a referral so that the team can review your circumstances and explain whether an outpatient consultation is appropriate.
