Inflammation and HBOT

Inflammation and HBOT

Inflammation plays a central role in healing, but left to run wild, this process can lead to arthritis, heart disease, and Alzheimer's.

-Harvard Medical School

Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been demonstrated to enhance the ability to recover from pathologic inflammation at the cellular level. Oxygen under pressure has the unique ability to stimulate hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), which plays a major role in fighting chronic inflammation.

The 2019 Nobel Prize was awarded to a professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, for his groundbreaking discovery of hypoxia-inducible factor 1, or HIF-1, the protein that switches genes on and off in cells in response to oxygen levels.

Recovery from chronic and pathologic inflammation by reducing hypoxia and  increasing circulation to tissues. These benefits also have implications for those who sustain a concussion or mild brain injury, concussions, inflammatory joint disease and a number of other inflammatory conditions.

BENEFITS OF HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY FOR THOSE WITH INFLAMMATION

Clinical studies have demonstrated the following benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for individuals with pathologic inflammation.

ENHANCE CELLULAR MIGRATION, REPAIR AND REGENERATION

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy enhances repair and regeneration in people recovering from inflammatory conditions.

  • Attenuates the Effects of Hypoxia
  • Promotes Neurogenesis and Angiogenesis
  • Moderates Mitochondrial Disorders
  • Enhances Stem Cell Mobilization and
    Proliferation
  • Increases Tissue Recovery
  • Stimulates Neuroplasticity
  • Induces Remyelination
  • Augments Concussion Recovery

IMPROVE OVERALL FUNCTION WITH HBOT

  • Advances Cellular Function
  • Improves Chemotaxis
  • Enhances Mitochondrial Function
  • Alleviates Swelling
  • Lessens Severity of Inflammation
  • Stimulates Better Immune Response
  • Improves Pain Scores

Sports Injury Recovery With HBOT

Sports Injury Recovery With HBOT

Whether a patient’s injury is from sports or trauma, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a natural tool that may aid in the healing process and shorten recovery time.

PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES HAVE BEEN UTILIZING HYPERBARIC OXYGEN TO REPAIR AND ENHANCE THEIR PERFORMANCE FOR YEARS

Patients healing from an injury face many challenges when attempting to get back in to the game or even back to work. If surgery is necessary, then recovery may take even longer and patients may require extensive rehabilitation.

HBOT is an option that may speed healing while minimizing the effects of these other challenges. The number of athletes and patients experiencing a high complication rate is attributable to blood supply disruption resulting ischemia, necrosis, infection, wound dehiscence, and excessive scarring. Inflammation plays a major role in the healing process, but can cause complications if not treated effectively.

HBOT improves this by inducing new blood vessel growth and decreasing the inflammatory response through the activation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).

Many surgeons now recommend pre and/or post-operative HBOT to their patients in order to enhance their healing, recovery and results. Sports Trainers promote HBOT to give a better foundation to the healing process.

BENEFITS OF HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY FOR ATHLETES AND PATIENTS

Clinical studies have demonstrated the following benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for patients after traumatic or sports injury.

Chronic Lyme Disease

Chronic Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is debilitating disease spread through deer-tick bites and is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. Lyme disease is currently responsible for 91 percent of all vector-borne diseases.

As many as 300,000 people contract Lyme disease in the United States every year. The descent into chronic Lyme and pathologic inflammation leads to fatigue, disability, and eventually neurologic changes.

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY HAS BEEN RESEARCHED AND FOUND TO BE AN EFFECTIVE ADJUNCT THERAPY IN THE TREATMENT OF CHRONIC LYME DISEASE

In recent studies HBOT show great promise as a treatment for Lyme disease. More than 20 years ago an American scientist and medical doctor discovered that oxygen under pressure, or HBOT, was effective at killing the Borrelia bacteria that is responsible for Lyme disease. By increasing ambient pressure to 2-3x atmospheric pressure, the study found that almost 85% patients had statistically significant improvements in their chronic Lyme disease.

Since this tremendously successful study a number of clinicians have used HBOT to treat patients with chronic Lyme disease. With early infection antibiotics may kill the Borrelia bacteria. Unfortunately Lyme disease is often found too late for antibiotics to be successful because the bacteria hides in fibroblasts and protects the bacteria from antibiotic therapy. Hyperbaric Oxygen is able to penetrate into the fibroblasts and uses oxygen and Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) to kill the bacteria.
